Second University of Tennessee Professor Sentenced in Export Violation
According to the Knoxville News, Professor Daniel Max Sherman was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison on Monday for providing extension information to retired Professor Roth, already convicted of export violation and sentenced to four years in prison.
“I am truly story for my actions in this matter,” Sherman told U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan. “I apologize for what I did, and I can guarantee it absolutely will not happen again.”
Both Sherman and Roth testified that they did not believe their research was subject to export controls. There is no evidence that Sherman benefited financially from his research. The judge agreed that he did not believe Sherman intend to violate the law, but prison was the most appropiate sentence because of the severity to the crime.
